We are catalyzing a movement of everyday disciples joining the mission of Jesus!

Meet Brett

Pastor, Coach, Professor, Trail Runner

More than a title or role, my passion is connecting EVERYONE to Jesus & His mission. The Great Commission is for everyone! While churches rightfully champion Jesus’ command to make disciples, my work is fueled by the conviction that every member should have ownership of and agency on the mission of Jesus.

I live into that passion as a pastor, professor, and coach. I love seeing everyday folks joining the mission of Jesus where they live, learn, work, and play. This is how God will renew our cities. I’m working to see a Kingdom missionary on every block, a house church in every neighborhood, and a thriving church in every community until the spiritual landscape of California is transformed. I pray that for your community as well!

My family and I live in Southern California, where I pastor (Community Church Rancho) and teach (Hope International University). I have a doctorate with a focus on discipleship in the New Testament world, and have practiced disciple-making as an overseas missionary, church staff, and in the rhythms of everyday life. My wife Kristin is an elementary school teacher. We’re often carting some number of our four girls between soccer and waterpolo. Outside of that, you’ll find me running in the mountains around LA and the Eastern Sierras.

Our Pursuits

Catalytic Prayer // Mobilizing radical prayer for a radical work of God

Everyday Mission // Training and commissioning kingdom workers to join the mission of Jesus where they live, learn, work, and play

Healthy Leaders // Coaching and caring for church and mission leaders towards soul care and mission clarity

New Churches // New expressions of church taking life and reproducing everywhere

Kingdom Innovation // Taking risks and trying new things to reveal God’s kingdom on earth as it is in heaven

Core Convictions

“Every member on mission” // First, the Great Commission is for everyone – everyday (Mt. 28:18-20). While churches rightfully champion Jesus’ command to make disciples, our work is fueled by the conviction that every member should have ownership of and agency on the mission of Jesus. Our vision, then, is to see every member of Christ’s church on mission.

“Practicing our way into obedience” // Secondly, the proof of discipleship is in the practice (Mt. 7:24; 1 John 2:6). Discipleship shouldn’t be narrowed to a program or curriculum; it’s a way of life and needs to be practiced more than taught. Our vision, then, is to see every member practicing the basic spiritual rhythms (“Love God”), relational engagement (“Love Others”), and disciple-making habits (“Make Disciples”) that we see in Jesus.

“Proximity and potency” // Third, disciple-making is necessarily and irreducibly relational. Jesus spent time rubbing off on his disciples (John 3:22), debriefing their ministry experience (Luke 10:1-24), and giving them an example of self-giving love and sacrificial service (Mt. 16:24-27). Paul adds, “imitate me, just as I imitate Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1). This requires relational proximity. Alongside this, disciple-making also requires spiritual potency. Our life and conversations should plant gospel seeds, as we start potent spiritual conversations in the context of meaningful relationships. Our vision, then, is to mobilize a movement rooted in the relational proximity and spiritual potency of ordinary believers in the world.

“Take a coach approach” // Four, people development is at the heart of disciple-making (2 Tim. 2:2). The disciple-maker is not a hero but a guide, utilizing guided self-discovery – or a coach approach – to help others experience God and respond to Him. Our vision, then, is to elevate the tools and training of coaching to unleash Great Commission impact.

We can help.
